A course for potters who want to improve their throwing on the wheel, whilst also learning about, discussing and debating how potters can reduce their impact on climate change.
If you are looking for some dedicated time and space, with expert tuition to boost your throwing skills this week is ideal. With four and a half days on the wheel Jodie will go into the detail for preparing and wedging your clay, improving centering on the wheel, throwing cylinders, turning and trimming pots, attaching handles and exploring other forms including bowls, mugs, jugs, and plates. Together with Jodie you will work towards repeat throwing to make consistent pots, and focus on the process of throwing for great quality ceramics.
Alongside being a potter Jodie has a full-6me job as the director of the Ofgem Strategic Innovaton Fund at Innovate UK, an energy network innovation fund to accelerate delivery of net zero. She has been working to tackle climate change for over 15 years, and working as a potter for 6 years including a part time apprenticeship for 2 years. In 2024 Jodie was the recipient of a Churchill Fellowship Award following her fellowship she published A Churchill Fellowship research paper on how potters can most effectively lower energy use to reduce impact on climate change, with a focus on electric firing and kilns. Jodie will present her paper and discuss the issues facing potters in relation to Climate change during the week.
There is a wheel for each participant so you will have plenty of dedicated time at the wheel. The intention of the class is to practice your throwing rather than creating work to be glazed and fired, however if you would like a few key pieces to be fired and glazed we can arrange that at the end of the week with a small charge applied for the cost f firing/glazing and couriering your work back to you.
“I’m learning all the time. I’m motivated by the feedback from people who love and use my tableware everyday. Without their encouragement I wouldn’t be the potter I am today.”
