This immersive weekend course is for people with some basic throwing experience who want to improve their skills.
If you are looking for some dedicated time and space, with expert tuition and nourishing food in a creative space with other potters, this weekend is ideal. The course will include techniques for preparing and wedging your clay, improving centering on the wheel, throwing cylinders, turning and trimming pots, attaching handles and exploring other forms including bowls, mugs, jugs, and plates. Together with your tutor Jodie you will work towards repeat throwing to make consistent pots, and focus on the process of throwing for great quality ceramics.
Jodie is driven by achieving the best quality and form in whatever she makes, creating useful and beautiful items for the home. She lives near to Coombe on Dartmoor and swims in the river most days. Working in stoneware Jodie spends time focusing on making her own glazes. She taught herself to throw at college when she was 16 and loved it, she then thought a career and a ‘proper job’ was the right path, as a result she didn’t touch clay again for 17 years. After a life changing experience Jodie decided to take part in one of Laurel Keeley’s pottery courses here at Coombe and as a result she fell in love with clay all over again. Jodie went on to do evening classes, and then a two-year pottery apprenticeship. That led her to becoming a pottery teacher at Studio 45 with Richenda Macgregor, Mel Chambers, and Raphaela Seck. Her work became part time so she could focus on her pottery (she still works three days a week on energy and climate change). When Jodie isn’t working she now spends most of the rest of her time potting in her mega shed in the garden.
Jodie is committed to a life making pots and given that we’re in a climate emergency she’s also committed to making it as energy efficient and eco conscious as she can.
There is a wheel for each participant so you will have plenty of dedicated time at the wheel. The intention of the class is to practice your throwing rather than creating work to be glazed and fired, however if you would like a few key pieces to be fired and glazed we can arrange that at the end of the week with a small charge applied for the cost f firing/glazing and couriering your work back to you.
MATERIALS LIST FOR THIS COURSE
If you have them, bring pottery tools, otherwise we will provide a basic selection. You will need a sketchbook and drawing materials.
Whilst the emphasis of this course is practice without the intent to keep work, you will have the chance to keep work and have it fired if you wish. Any work that you’d like fired will be charged at £5 per kilo/clay to include firing and glazing with work posted to you at standard courier rates.
