Pottery - 5 Day Advanced Throwing Course with Tim Andrews.

  • Coombe Farm Studios (map)

A throwing course designed to advance your skills by working on a range of different more advanced shapes and developing precision. Designed for those intermediate throwers that want to go to the next level.

Using throwing and turning techniques in stoneware, explore a range of forms and sizes included more advanced lidded vessels, a teapot, Tim’s signature ‘humbug’ below, faceted pots, larger forms and more.

Tim Andrews is well known for his exquisite Raku fired pottery (images of which appear on this page) he is also a master on the wheel. In this course Tim will not only draw on his early influences from training and then working with David Leach – and his subsequent 45 years of experience as a master potter – but also his very personal ties with Japanese culture, history and ceramics.

The course will examine the practical and aesthetic relationships of thrown vessels with special attention given to proportions, experimental and interesting shapes and the fit of lidded vessels.

  • Intermediate to advanced throwers who can already throw consistently and have thrown a range of forms but want to develop more forms and hone their skills.

Please note that beginners skills cannot be taught on this course.

  • The main focus of the course is on learning and developing skill however we appreciate that you might want to keep some of the work you have made.

    TAKING WORK HOME TO FIRE

If you have your own kiln you can then take the work home to be glazed and fired. If you’re taking your work home there’s a £2 per kilo charge for the clay.

LEAVING WORK HERE FOR US TO FIRE FOR YOU.

If you would like us to glaze your work using our in-house glazes, we will allow the work to dry after the course, bisque fire it, apply the glaze and fire again. This process takes time, how long will depend on the other work going through the studio at the time and we will keep you informed of the process and timeline.

There is a charge of £5 per kilo for any work you’d like fired and glazed in this way (NB as a rule of thumb something the size of a mug costs around £1.40).

Once completed you can collect your work or it can be couriered to you. Courier costs dependant on how much work and your location.

  • All equipment and materials are provided for you but feel free to bring any of your own pottery tools and note charges for keeping work/firing etc above.

Tim is a master, I learnt so much from him, he’s so generous with his knowledge, the course re-ignited my passion and the food - oh the food during the week was incredible!
