What to Expect
A uniquely specialist class with a max 6 people, professional tuition, focused exclusively on throwing Ramen Bowls.
A good ramen bowl is more than a vessel to hold food. Its proportions, depth, weight and shape all affect the way ramen is served and eaten.
This course brings together Japanese food culture and specialist ceramics, with Yoshi Taguchi and Raphaela Seck sharing their different perspectives on what makes a great ramen bowl.
Yoshi was the chef and owner of Taguchi-Ya in Totnes, known for its Japanese home cooking and ramen nights. Since closing in 2025, she has continued to cook through pop-ups and special events. She will open the course with a talk and Q&A exploring ramen, Japanese food culture and the relationship between the food and the bowl it is served in.
Raphaela Seck is a skilled potter and teacher with nine years of experience working with clay and six years of teaching. She co-ran Studio 45 in Dartington and is a founder of The Community Pottery in Bristol and has developed a reputation for her stunning ramen bowls and teaching that focuses on helping people develop their own approach to clay rather than following a single prescribed method.
Following Yoshi’s talk, Raphaela will demonstrate how to approach ramen bowl forms on the wheel. Over the following weeks you’ll design, throw, trim and glaze your own bowls, exploring proportion and shape through practice and refinement.
The emphasis is on quality over quantity. You’ll make many bowls during the course, but will select your four strongest pieces to be glazed and fired at Coombe.
Once the pots are fired, we’ll put them to use.
Yoshi will take over the Coombe kitchen for an izakaya-inspired ramen evening, cooking ramen for you to enjoy from the bowls you’ve made. Each course participant has two places included, so you can bring a guest.
* Izakaya – a casual Japanese place for drinks, food and conversation.
Beer and sake will be available to buy on the night. Drinks are not included.
-
Suitable for anyone that has some experience of throwing on the wheel and wants to progress their skills in a non-competitive professional arts environment and focus on refining one form.
