This course offers you time to connect with the landscape through conversation, mark making and brush work techniques. Building on your confidence in colour theory with oil paints over three days.

The course is designed to work well if you are a beginner painter, perhaps new to oil painting or working with oils for the first time because there will be lots of structure to how you’ll approach the work. It will also work well those of you with quite a lot of experience that feel a bit ‘stuck’ this is a chance to get inspired and get connected to the land, slow down and enjoy experimenting with a different approach.

You will begin outside, finding inspiration from details in the landscape; looking, drawing, collecting. The weekend will offer an opportunity to move from quick, playful pencil exercises onto creating a composition on a wooden panel with oil paints inspired by the walks findings.

Meredith Owen is an English artist living and working in Cornwall. Brought up in an old converted chapel built into the side of a cliff. Surrounded by wildlife, and the daughter of two artists; her upbringing instilled in her an appreciation for nature and its astounding, intricate beauty. Meredith’s work explores a relationship with the landscape, more specifically interactions with nature when on foot. She works in a detailed manner on wooden panels, usually ply. Employing rhythm with the strokes made that echoes the rhythm of the steps walked in the landscapes she paints.

‘My paintings take time; I build layers with small brush marks, developing each scene until it captures the essence of the place I have walked through’.

RESIDENTIAL
includes all your food, accommodation and tuition from arrival on Thursday evening through to departure after lunch on Sunday.

Includes tuition, welcome drinks on Sunday night and all lunches.
NB Residents are not required to share bedrooms, but bathrooms are shared [we do not have any en suite rooms onsite]. See residential facilities for more info.

We have plenty of free onsite parking.

Totnes is nearest station then we can arrange lift shares or send taxi details. We are about 20 minutes from the station and costs approx £35 each way.

Food is a key part of an immersive course at Coombe. Meals are taken at a long shared tables with the other participants Our onsite chef caters for you including all/any dietary requirements. We grow our own vegetables and keep chickens for fresh eggs daily. For those that enjoy wine, we have a fantastic wine merchant who supply us with a small range available to buy onsite.
Oil paints - limited palette, Meredith uses; Mussini oil paints (but any will do) colours meredith uses are - vermillion red, madder lake dark red, sap green, helio green,brilliant yellow, indian yellow, ultramarine blue, prussian blue, titanium white.
A selection of fine oil painting brushes and a couple of wider brushes for base layers.
Danish oil / natural matt oil for treating the ply.
Ply panel 3mm - 9mm thick and whatever size you would like to paint on. Meredith tends to use a 6mm ply in Douglass, Birch or Oak and usually around 40cm x 60cm in scale.
